The Constitution of Mackichan Hall managing committee was drawn up by Dr.
A. Normand in 1925 and has not been changed ever since. It contains the
provision for a VETO by the warden which has never been used, since its
inception. The Constitution has embedded the tradition of the hostel.
The Hostel Committee has always given great attention to the work in hand
or ahead.
The residents who are interested in standing for the election should satisfy the following
criteria:
-
The candidates should have stayed in Mackichan Hall for at least two consecutive
academic terms.
-
They must have passed their previous examinations without any A.T.K.T and
failures are not allowed.
-
They should have a good record in the hostel as well as in the college.
The candidates should have no disciplinary actions taken against them
either by the hostel or college authorities.
-
All nominations must be recommended by two senior residents.
-
Same resident should not propose / second more than once for the same nominee.
-
All the nominees will have to appear for an interview with the warden.
There is always tough competition among the candidates and they are given time
to try and convince other hostelers to vote for them. The interview with
the Warden is the last hurdle to cross before the election. This encounter
with the authority of the hostel is what really tests the candidate's
leadership qualities and also how he would deal with various situations
and pressures. The few days preceding the elections are very exciting
for all the boys as they will have to choose the person who will be representing
them during the whole academic year.
Mackichan Hall is the only hostel amongst the three hostels of Wilson College which
still follows the tradition of democratic and completely fair elections.
It is held by using secret ballot paper. The condition for which the ballot
paper is accepted is as follows:
- A student can vote for a minimum of three candidates and a maximum of
five candidates or else his ballot paper is considered as invalid.
-
The Warden always gives a broad and a very detailed speech on
the elections to the hostelers just before the voting begins.
Once the voting is over, the counting begins and the results are declared
immediately. Following the elections, the five elected candidates sit
together with the Warden and decide amongst
themselves who will go for which post. Once the committee has
already been formed, the Warden appoints four more people who go for
the following posts:
|
Mess Secretary
House Keeping Secretary
Garden Secretary
Computer In charge
